From sites made famous in the American Revolution to the first
public university in the nation, we have plenty for history buffs and
the history curious to geek out about.

Take a Campus Tour
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill holds appeal for than just alums. Take a guided tour of campus to learn centuries-old traditions and the answer to the age-old question: “What’s a Tar Heel?”

Taste Some Old-School Treats
Hit Franklin Street to find not one but two restaurants that are celebrating a century in service. Carolina Coffee Shop, the oldest restaurant in North Carolina, offers Southern cuisine, a full bar, weekend brunch, and, yes, coffee. Across the street, Sutton’s Drug Store is a more casual affair, with burgers and hot dogs served fresh off an old-fashioned grill inside an old-timey former pharmacy.

Time-Travel Through Hillsborough
History is literally waiting around every corner in Hillsborough. Join a lecture at the Burwell School Historic Site (ca. 1821), View unique items from the earliest indigenous people through the twentieth century at Orange County Historical Museum, or enjoy tales of history, hauntings, and mystery on a two-hour Haunted Hillsborough walking tour.

Cruise NASCAR’s Last Dirt Speedway
On foot, of course. The Historic Occoneechee Speedway Trail in Hillsborough offers an easy, three-mile stroll that includes the only dirt speedway remaining from NASCAR's inaugural 1949 season.
