Slow down and explore your surroundings during a quiet walk on nature trails, preserves, gardens and historic places. This time of year, it’s good to layer up for cooler temps averaging in the 40’s and 50’s but a beautiful warm day in the 70’s is not unheard of.

Here are a few recommendations for a winter stroll:

Winter walks on the campus of the University of North Carolina -Chapel Hill can be a very rewarding experience. Even in winter, the campus is a beautiful sight with stone walls, historic buildings, and spacious quads. Visit the Old Well, the Morehead-Patterson Bell Tower, the Unsung Founders Memorial, Wilson Library and Old East to get a sense of this iconic university. Named for the Occaneechi Tribe, Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area is the highest point in Orange County at 867 ft. Four trails wind through a diverse forest including the Overlook trail which is a perfect spot for spectacular sunrises and sunsets. Interesting fact: the rare brown elfin butterfly has called the mountain home since the ice age. After your hike, explore the town of Hillsborough for quaint shops and eateries. Interesting fact: The Carolina Brewery is the oldest craft brewery in the Triangle (Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh area), established in 1995.

Arts, culture & performances to brighten winter days & nights

Performing arts are at their peak here during the winter with special events like the Annual Carrboro Film Festival (January 23-25) and the Annual Carolina Jazz Festival (February 26-28) worth a weekend getaway. Expect world class dance, music and theater presented by Carolina Performing Arts and PlayMakers Repertory Co., a diverse range of performances can be found at the community ArtsCenter, and a robust collection of 21,000 works of art spanning time periods and cultures are on view in rotation at the Ackland Art Museum.  Orange County also boasts many galleries featuring local and regional art. A visit to Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Hillsborough is a must for art enthusiasts.
