Current Recreation season hours 6:30am-6pm; Beginning Fri - Sun through November The Orange Water and Sewer Authority (OWASA) now offers kayaks for rent at University Lake. Enjoy boating, fishing, picnicking, sunbathing and other recreation through mid-November. Because OWASA's reservoirs are sources for drinking water, recreation is limited and controlled. For example, swimming and other body contact with lake water are not allowed. Visit the website for rental costs including canoes, kayaks and flat-bottomed boats as well as usage time. University Lake will also be open on Memorial Day, Independence Day,  and Labor Day.  The 213-acre lake was built by the University in 1932 as a source of drinking water for the University and the communities of Chapel Hill and Carrboro, as well as an outdoor recreation facility. University Lake is stocked with bass, crappie, catfish and a variety of sunfish. A State fishing license is necessary except on July 4th.  University Lake is on the west side of Carrboro near Jones Ferry Road. Bob Glosson, Senior Assistant Lake Warden, 942-8007 or
