The hardships triggered by intense poverty, amidst plenty, are among North Carolina’s most potent challenges. Our rates of poverty, child poverty, concentrated poverty, hunger, low wage work, income inequality and the percentage of residents without health insurance are among the worst in the nation. The burdens fall very disproportionately on racial minorities, women, and children. And they are difficult to square with our claims to equal justice under law. Nichol will explore poverty across North Carolina principally through narrative – conversations with hundreds of impoverished rural and urban Tar Heels. He will also explore the North Carolina General Assembly’s poverty policies over the last decade. Join us for an insightful and informative discussion. Instructor: Gene Nichol
