Note: This is an online offering that takes place via Zoom. Please ensure that you have access to an internet capable device. How have (and how do) stand-up comedians perform authenticity? Do comedians denaturalize our perceptions of the world—that is, can they radically reorient our understanding of institutions and practices that we take for granted? Can we truly appreciate the brilliant mechanics of their jokes if we find their politics or prejudices deeply offensive? This course will address these questions and will explore what might stand-up comedy offer to those of us who are experiencing grief or depression? We will discuss excerpts from performances by Joan Rivers, Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, Tig Notaro, Jerrod Carmichael, Ramy Youssef, and Ali Wong, among others. Join us for an informative and engaging session!
