It’s the summer of 1864, and the Civil War is raging toward its conclusion. In an army hospital in Raleigh, Confederate soldier W.P. Inman is recovering from a neck wound he sustained during the siege of Petersburg. Realizing that he’ll be sent to the front lines to die once he has fully recuperated, Inman sets out on foot for his home in Cold Mountain in search of his beloved Ada. His journey is fraught with peril: the Home Guard in search of deserters like him, a lecherous preacher attempting to murder a lover, a war widow seeking solace. Meanwhile, back in Cold Mountain, Ada has been barely surviving since her father’s death. Unsure whether Inman is alive, she fends off advances from Teague, the head of the local Home Guard, as her farm at Black Cove falls into disrepair. Her only hope is Ruby, a hardscrabble mountain woman who arrives just in time to teach her how to survive.
