In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the 1969 Apollo 11 Moon Landing, UNC’s Morehead Planetarium and Science Center is welcoming Astronaut Charlie Duke, the 10th person to walk on the Moon, and Astronaut Mae Jemison, the first woman of color in space. These two live events will be part of Lift Off NC: Apollo + Beyond, a series of celebrations themed around the Apollo missions and space flight. Charlie Duke walked on the Moon during Apollo 16. He is also well known for being the voice of mission control for Apollo 11. Duke’s Apollo 16 mission was the first scientific mission sent to the Moon and a video of Charlie on YouTube shows him taking samples from the Moon. As one of the 62 astronauts who trained at Morehead in the early 1960s, he is excited to be back. Charlie Duke will be speaking at The Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History on Friday, February 22, 7pm.
