    Lichens (Short Course)

    This class is intended for a broad audience. Lichens (lichenized fungi) are symbiotic organisms that consist of fungal, algal and bacterial partners. Among the first life-forms to live on land, lichens have occupied nearly every habitat on Earth and grow on many of the surfaces of our environment. This class introduces students to the fascinating world of lichen biology, the dazzling diversity of the local lichen flora, and their importance as indicators of environmental health. Includes lecture, demonstrations, and a field trip. Serves as 1/2 elective credit for the Certificate in Native Plant Studies. Bring your lunch. No prerequisite. Fee: $80 ($70 NCBG members)

    Magic in the Garden Workshop with Kidzu

    The young and young-at-heart are invited to join us for an enchanting morning of family fun in the children's Wonder Garden at the North Carolina Botanical Gardens (NCBG). Build magical homes for fairies, elves, and other wee folk using natural materials, craft your own fairy wings, plant a magical seed, and more. Bring your imagination and love of nature... and come dressed in your most magical costume! Program will take place entirely at the NCBG. Fee is $10 per child, with a 10% discount for Kidzu & NCBG members! Open to ages 4 and up. Registration through NCBG is required.     McKee CornField Maze

    Family Fun in the Country – Pumpkins, Farm Animals, Hayrides and more. 2 Mazes for Family Fun.  Adventurous 12-acre maze and 2-acre fun maze for children.  Cornfield Maze and activities runs through October 31.  Fridays 3 pm – 8 pm, Saturdays, 10 am – 8 pm and Sundays 1 pm – 7 pm.  Haunted Maze:  October 19, 25, 26 & 31.  Haunted Maze Hours 6 pm – 10 pm.  Admission is $10 for ages 3-adult, while 2 and under free.  Check website or call (919) 732-8065.

    Terra Vita

    Named one of the “10 Southern Food Festivals You Need to Taste” by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution – will return for a fourth season, thanks to community support. Renowned North Carolina chefs, artisans and makers of top sustainable wines, microbrews, spirits and coffee will unite October 12, 2013 for the Grand Tasting on the Green, which will be held at Southern Village in Chapel Hill.     Alan Biermann Discusses his Biography for Children ‘Chuck Yeager Goes Supersonic’

    Young readers will love the legend of the great American aviator, Chuck Yeager, who grew up from humble beginnings to become the first person to fly a plane faster than the speed of sound. This beautifully illustrated book shows scenes of Chuck as a boy in rural West Virginia, describes his wild flights as a test pilot in the U. S. Air Force, and recounts the terrifying bumping and rattling flights as he neared the "sound barrier."

    University Day

    Celebrate the anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of the oldest public university in the country. Carol Folt will be installed as Carolina’s 11th Chancellor and the University will mark its 220th birthday (University Day) on Saturday, October 12.  Festivities will begin at 1:30 p.m. in Polk Place (the quad between South Building and Wilson Library).  The Carolina Choir and the UNC Wind Ensemble will play during the traditional procession of faculty, students, staff, alumni, and visiting dignitaries.  The ceremony will begin at 2 p.m.  Folt will deliver an installation address during the ceremony on the steps of South Building.The ceremony will conclude with 11 peals of the South Building bell, honoring UNC’s 11th chancellor.   After the ceremony, there will be cake and lemonade in front of Wilson Library.     The Amazing Kreskin

    "Even now, I know what you're thinking!" - The Amazing Kreskin. A popular and regular performer on such shows as Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, David Letterman, Regis Philbin, and most famously The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson.  Johnny's "Carnac the Magnificent" character was a spoof on Amazing Kreskin.     BONECRACKER presents their brand of Kick-down-the-door-prov with a special guest at every show. Bring it on. When you think BONE CRACKER, think Indiana Jones running from the boulder. Think the banana truck in the song 16 Tons making it around that hairpin mountain curve. Think ninjas versus pirates with time-travel katanas and light-saber hooks....in the above examples, BONE CRACKER is the boulder, the hairpin curve, and both the ninjas and pirates. Tickets $10.
