The Mellow Mushroom located in downtown Chapel Hill is opening Monday March 4 at 310 W. Franklin St. across from The Franklin Hotel. The restaurant serves pizzas, hoagies, salads, calzones, and appetizers, as well as options for vegetarians, vegans and children. Gluten-free items are also available.
According to Owner Kent Hodges they plan to have live bluegrass music on Tuesday nights. The restaurant has two full-service bars with craft beer, wine and liquor. It also will have a Mellow Beer Club.
You can't miss the super-colorful mural on the side of the building. According to owner, the mural is meant to emphasize commonalities between past and present. It has imagery drawn from psychedelic posters and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill college yearbooks.
The restaurant will be open seven days a week beginning at 11 am.
Also opening March 10 is Kipos Greek Taverna located at 421 West Franklin Street in the The Courtyard which is being redeveloped. Owner Giorgios Bakatsias, one of the Triangle’s best known restaurateurs, is bringing Kipos, which means “garden” in Greek, to downtown Chapel Hill.
The restaurant will feature fresh and robust village foods cooked in wood-burning ovens, honoring old and modern recipes alike. It’s a celebration of cheese, breads, mousaka, lamb youvetsi and more.
