From the Hillsborough Arts Council
It is time again for Hillsborough’s wonderful warm weather festival – Last Fridays, organized by the Hillsborough Arts Council. 2012 marks the 14th season of this terrific event that runs from April through September. Each month a new band headlines the fiesta with a free performance on the historic Old Courthouse lawn in downtown Hillsborough. Rounding out the festival are additional musicians, food and art vendors, an art walk, a pie contest, and much more! Come to downtown Hillsborough on April 27 from 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm.
Talented singer/songwriter and Raleigh native Jeanne Jolly will headline in April. Her knockout vocals, compared at times to Alison Krauss and Patsy Cline, can range from a full power delivery to a song full of tenderness, and her lyrics tell emotional musical stories that resonate down to listeners’ hearts.
CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIES
Everyone is welcome to join the Wes May and Brigitte Schubert’s Family Drum Circle behind the Courthouse during each Hillsborough’s Last Friday. No experience is necessary….bring your drums and dancing feet! Your participation is wildly encouraged! “Miss Kat’s Rhythm & Movement Class” will be hosting 20 minute movement sessions for children on the lawn of the old courthouse.
ADDITIONAL MUSICIANS
Weaver Street Market will have live music outside from 6-8pm featuring Sarah Shook and The Devil.
Get Last Fridays season off to a “rocking good start” at Hillsborough Presbyterian Church’s “Tryon Street Stage” with Dr. Drill and the Bits. Zach Drill and friends bring classic rock, blues and originals from their upcoming CD release “What the Doctor Ordered” that they prescribe as a sure cure for the blues. Great music and the traditional “Get the scoop” of free ice cream cones make for a fun evening on the closed street where the entire family can listen, dance, visit and enjoy a spring evening. Music from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m.
There’s a Pie Contest at Cup A Joe’s on King Street at 6 pm (though beginning in May it will expanded to include a Bake-Off with different themes each month).
April’s Last Fridays Art Walk, in its seventh year as a Last Fridays activity, showcases the talents of local artists in studios and galleries in downtown Hillsborough. Many venues will have artist and opening receptions on April 27 from 6 –9pm.
Also artists and craftspeople will set up their wares on the sidewalks around the Old Courthouse. Also for the April Last Friday, the Orange County Historical Museum and the Burwell School Historic Site will be open for tours. An excellent mix of downtown Hillsborough businesses will be alive with activity. Melissa Designer Jewelry gallery and working studio will feature handmade gold jewelry. Businesses located on both sides of Churton and King Streets will hold extended hours and special offerings during the Last Fridays event.
Plenty of parking during Last Fridays can be found at the Eno River parking deck.
No dogs are permitted in the courthouse area during Last Fridays by order of the police. Thanks for your understanding.
