The very musical Taylor family lived in Chapel Hill in the 1950s and 1960s while Dr. Isaac Taylor was on the faculty, and eventually the dean of the UNC Medical School. Isaac and Trudy Taylor's children have all been musicians (Alex, James, Kate, Livingston and Hugh) as have many of their grandchildren. This program will feature a film by Liz Witham, award-winning documentary filmmaker and daughter of Kate Taylor, about her mother and other Taylors in Chapel Hill and the Taylors' long-time home, Martha's Vineyard, Mass. Kate Taylor also will perform, and she and Liz will answer questions. The even begins with a reception at 5pm followed by the program at 5:30pm.

Preventing Genocide and the Responsibility to Protect
Dr. Andrea Bartoli of the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University addresses the topic of genocide. Post-election rioting in Kenya in December 2007 brought pressure on Nairobi, from international and regional diplomats, to end tensions and avert bloodshed on a massive scale. What lessons can be learned from the intervention in Kenya? What does it mean for the UN's emerging 'responsibility to protect' doctrine? This event is sponsored by Great Decisions Program and the Parr Center for Ethics.

The Marines of Montford Point: America's First Black Marines
Retired history professor Melton McLaurin will discuss the topic of his new book from UNC Press, 'The Marines of Montford Point: America's First Black Marines,' at this event sponsored by the GAA's Carolina College for Lifelong Learning. The men who trained at Montford Point, a segregated facility on Camp Lejeune, waited for 65 years to have their story told to the nation. Theirs is a quintessential American story, a story of dogged perseverance in the face of adversity; of devotion to duty; and of a deep seated belief, despite daily evidence to the contrary, in the ultimate triumph of the nation's fundamental ideals.

'Jo is one of those rare writer-performers where you get the sense, whatever your belief, that something greater is being channeled through his music and voice....Like Patti Smith, Grant Lee Phillips, Thom Yorke, he trances, and the voice, the meaning, becomes bigger than him, bigger than a few pop chords or words strung together.
