Hillsborough’s Family Fun Day is a special summer series held on the second Saturday of the month from June through September. A calendar of events and map will be available at the Orange County Visitor Center, 150 E. King St. from 10am-4pm.
July 11 Activities
Begin your day at the Alexander Dickson House, 150 E. King St., where children can complete a scavenger hunt around town and return their results for a prize.
The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough will have its *Second Saturday Tours *at 10am and 2pm. The 90-minute walking tour begins at the Orange County Visitor Center (The Alexander Dickson House). The tour will pass by many of Hillsborough’s historic homes, churches, and cemeteries, while also going inside a few of the restored buildings. Tour costs are $5 for adults and $2 for children (Ages 5-15).
The Orange County Historical Museum will host “Native American Day at the Orange County Museum.” From 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., children can learn about the lifestyle of the southeast woodland people by special demonstrations of tools and weapons by Blackfeather Jeffries and hear talks about women’s lives by Lynette Jeffries. The museum is located at 201 N. Churton St and the activity is free.
Come get your hands dirty at the Burwell School Historic Site. 319 N. Churton St. The Burwell School will host “Digging Into Our Past: Archaeology at the Burwell School”, from 11am – 4pm. Tour the grounds of the Burwell School and participate in two presentations at 1pm and 3pm on the concepts and practices of archaeology. Learn why archaeology is important to the Burwell School and participate in a dig after each presentation. Free. 919-732-7451.
After participating in an archaeological dig go cool off at the Triangle SportsPlex, 101 Meadowlands Dr., by taking a dip in the pool. There will be $1 off swim admission, making the cost $2.25 for kids and $3.25 for the day.
Be sure to visit the blacksmith shop at the Shops at Daniel Boone, located on S. Churton near the I-85 interchange. Paul Gove will demonstrate blacksmithing from 12-5pm. While at the Shops at Daniel Boone stop by the antique shops, auction house, and specialty stores throughout the village.
The Eno River Farmers’ Market is located at the Public Margaret House, East Margaret Lane, behind the courthouse. Fresh produce and products are available from 8am-12pm.
Hillsborough has a wide variety of unique restaurants and specialty shops. The Hillsborough Wine Company at 200 S. Churton will have a tasting of wines from 1-5pm. For a sweet treat stop by Matthew’s Chocolates located at 107 N. Churton St. and participate in the “Pick a Pop” game.
Family Fun Days have a myriad of activities to keep everyone busy in Hillsborough. Future Family Fun Days will be on August 8 and September 12.
