Family event featuring barbecue cooking contest, musical entertainment, antique car display, arts and crafts, food and merchandise vendors, Hog Day souvenirs and more. This year’s children’s activities include a bounce house and inflatables, pony rides, and small petting zoo. Enjoy corn toss games, remote race cars, 50/50 and more. Hog Day returns to the River Park off of E. Margaret Lane in downtown Hillsborough. Activities are June 18 from 6 pm – 9 pm and June 19 from 9am – 6 pm . Admission is Free .
New this year is the First Annual Hog Day Invitational. On Saturday, June 19, the top finishers from 2009 will be competing for People’s Choice. The pork prepared by these cooks will be served individually to the public, which will then vote for their favorite. For $5, attendees will be able to purchase a sample of each and then vote for People’s Choice. Also, $4 BBQ sandwiches will be sold as in previous years.
Also new is the Eno River Farmers Market recipe contest and cook off at the Public Market House as a part of the Hog Day festivities on June 19th. Contestants will prepare four quarts of a homemade cold vegetable side dish. Each contestant will make their entry at home and bring it to the Public Market House between 8-10 am on June 19th for judging. Hog Day patrons will then be able to sample the sides alongside their award-winning barbecue. Prizes will be given for Best Use of Local Ingredients in addition to First, Second and Third Place. The entrants will be split into two categories: amateur and professional.

Hog Day is presented by the Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce with proceeds going to support the chamber’s community programs.

This week is a nationwide annual salute to Travel and Tourism in America. First celebrated in 1984, NTW events are presented in cities, states and travel businesses to champion the power of travel. The U.S. Travel Association is asking all industry partners to “Stand Up and Be Counted” as one of more than 10 million American workers in the travel industry. Stop by the Visitors Center on Franklin Street for a copy of our new visitors guide with ideas on what to do and see in Orange County. Look for the banner in the window and don’t forget to grab a mint to remember all the “cool” things to do on your visit to Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Hillsborough.
North Carolina’s Travel and Tourism Day will be celebrated May 18 at the North Carolina Legislature. The event will allow tourism leaders the opportunity to show lawmakers the importance of this industry to our state and economy in this “Tourism Day Extravaganza” coordinated by the NC Travel Industry Association.
The Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau will participate with a exhibit booth at the Legislative Building highlighting travel to Orange County and attendance at a reception at the Museum of Natural Sciences.

The ArtsCenter’s 35th anniversary celebration, called Cirque des Artes, will feature all the many art forms that make The ArtsCenter so much fun, all in a setting reminiscent of a Parisian street festival. The day begins with an outdoor festival from 12 noon to 4 p.m. It’s interesting and quirky family fun in a pay-as-you go style. End the day with an evening party from 8 to 11 p.m. with the Triangle Jazz Band, a silent auction and lots of special surprises. Tickets are $50 per person or $75 per couple and available at The ArtsCenter Box Office at (919) 929-2787, ext 201 and online at ArtsCenter. Only 300 tickets will be sold. All proceeds benefit the ArtsCenter “Keep Arts Centered” campaign.

Make plans to be in Hillsborough for the Last Fridays. Artists, food vendors, musicians and craftspeople set up their wares on the sidewalks around the courthouse on Churton and King streets. The Art walk features local artist’s studios and galleries hosting opening night receptions. Businesses, galleries, studios, restaurants, museums and historic sites remain open and offer numerous special events. Don’t forget the Hillsborough Pie Contest at Cup a Joe’s.
On April 30 Armand Lenchek & Bluesology featuring Will McFarlane perform See Grady Brown Elementary School students dressed in costume as famous people of the past in a Living Wax Museum at the Orange County Historical Museum.
