Hillsborough is famous not only for its Revolutionary War past, but for its Civil War past as well. Many sites around town have their own Civil War significance and fascinating stories to tell. The Alexander Dickson House is one such site. In April of 1865 Generals Wade Hampton and Joseph Johnston met at the home to discuss their terms of surrender before meeting with William T. Sherman just a few miles down the road at Bennett Place.
On Saturday, April 7th from 10:00am to 4:00pm the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough, in conjunction with the Orange County Historical Museum and the Burwell School Historic Site, will hold Civil War Living History Day. Come to the Alexander Dickson House, located at 150 E. King St., in downtown Hillsborough to learn what life was like during the Civil War. There will be cooking and firing demonstrations, guided walking tours of Hillsborough’s historic district, games for children and the young at heart, and a Hands on History corner. Guided walking tours will be held at 11:00am and 1:00pm and will last one hour. The cost for the tours is $5 per person. There is a limit of 25 people per tour, so advance reservations are recommended. To make reservations please call 919-732-7741 or email Sarah DeGennaro.

FRANK Art Gallery will host its 2nd Birthday party and fundraiser, OFF THE WALL, at the gallery at 109 E. Franklin Street in Chapel Hill on Saturday, April 21 at 6 pm. Last year’s gala was sold-out. 100 pieces of art will be donated by FRANK artists and other artists. Only 100 tickets are available for purchase, the same as the number of works of art, ensuring that every ticket holder will be taking a piece of fine art home. Tickets are $225 each.
When you enter the event with an art ticket, your name will be dropped in FRANK’s “hat.” After enjoying delightful food and drinks donated by generous area restaurants and chefs, the guest host WUNC’s Frank Stasio will draw names, one by one, from the hat. When your name is called, you’ll choose your new piece of original fine art, valued from over $300 to $2000! Take it home right OFF THE WALL! There will be a few surprise silent auction items, too.
A companion ticket is available for $75 with the purchase of a $225 art ticket. Your companion will enjoy the festivities, but only you choose a piece of art! The art pieces will be on display beginning April 10. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit FRANK and its educational programming, exhibits, and community outreach programs.
Please contact Barbara Rich, Gallery Director at (919) 636-4135 for more information or visit http://www.frankisart.com.
