Come join a remarkable group of Piedmont farmers and cooks for an evening of food, live music and fun at the Farm to Fork Picnic 2012 on Sunday, May 20 from 4 – 7 pm. The Farm to Fork picnic is in a field next to the W.C. Breeze Farm Extension & Research Center is at 4909 Walnut Grove Church Road in Hurdle Mills, NC – a few miles north of Hillsborough. This event pairs local farmers with local chefs; the farmers provide the ingredients and the chefs create the dishes. There are wine and local beer. It’s a celebration of the Triangle culinary scene.
Tickets are $100 (drinks included) and children 12 and under are admitted free. Tickets must be purchased in advance. The picnic will take place rain for shine.
Farm to Fork is organized by Orange County, The Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) and Slow Food Triangle. Proceeds will benefit farmer training programs at CEFS and Breeze Farm. The event is sponsored by NC Agricultural Foundation, Inc.

Come to the 30th Annual Hillsborough Hog Day on Friday, May 18 from 6 pm – 9 pm and Saturday, May 19 from 9 am – 6pm at the River Park behind the Courthouse at 140 E. Margaret Lane in Downtown Hillsborough, NC. Admission to Hog Day is FREE.
Hillsborough Hog Day is a fantastic, fun family event featuring 4,000 pounds of fresh-cooked barbecue, live musical entertainment, children’s games, pony rides and inflatables, and a vintage and classic car show from the Triangle Thunder Cruisers. Enjoy crafters, BBQ sandwiches, food and merchandise vendors, Hog Day souvenirs and more. Bring a lawn chair or blanket. Contests include barbecue cooking, and kid’s pig calling. There’s a People’s Choice for Favorite BBQ and a Beer Garden by Hillsborough’s Mystery Brewing Company. The Eno River Farmers Market will be on site on Saturday, but not in the Farmers Pavilion. Also market parking will not be available on site.

Take Interstate 85 Exit 164 or Interstate 40 Exit 261. Look for signs. Parking is available in the Eno River Parking Deck for $3. Patrons are requested to bring canned or boxed food items as donations to the Food Pantry for Orange Congregations on Friday night, May 19. BBQ sandwiches will be sold both days.

The University of North Carolina will be hosting the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Championships Thursday – Saturday, May 10-12. The quarterfinals of the tournament will take place Thursday, May 10, beginning at noon. Additional games on May 10 are at 2:30 pm, 5 pm and 7:30 pm. The semifinals will begin Friday, May 11, at 1 pm and the second game is at 3:30 pm. The Championship game will be played Saturday, May 12, at 4 pm. All games will be played at Anderson Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C. The stadium is located on Raleigh Road (Hwy 54) behind the UNC General Administration Building.

The week long celebration is designed to raise awareness about the economic value of travel and to promote the impact travelers have on areas like Orange County, NC.
In Orange County, travel matters and is a significant sector of the economy with domestic visitor spending generating $144 million in 2010. More than 1,600 jobs in Orange County are directly attributable to travel and tourism. Tax revenues from travel to Orange County amounted to a total of $11.37-million ($8.45-million from the state and $2.92-million from the county). This represents an $85 tax saving to each county resident. No property taxes are used to fund the Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau, rather funding comes from the hotel occupancy tax paid by visitors.

The Carolina Inn is in the 10th season of its popular end-of-the-workweek celebration called “Fridays on the Front Porch” each Friday from 5-8 p.m. The Inn offers live music and a picnic menu ($10 for adults/$5 for children) with beer, wine and drink specials, and plenty of comfortable seating under the shady oaks and magnolias on the Inn’s front lawn. There is no cover charge or reservations for the event. Jazz & More Brunch and After Hours on Carrboro’s Weaver Street Market lawn features great music paired with great food under the oaks. Jazz & More Brunch starts Sunday, May 6 and runs every week from 11 am-1pm through October 14. After Hours runs as two separate music series this season.
