The ArtsCenter in Carrboro brings the best local and regional music to East 54 every other Thursday night for the new 5:40 Summer Music Series. This is Chapel Hill’s newest development with condos, shops, dining and the Aloft Hotel off of Raleigh Road near the Finley Golf Course. The free 5:40 pm event is held on the new East 54 Plaza through Sept 9. Food and drink specials available.
The series continues June 3 with Jonathan Byrd from Carrboro, playing Folk, Acoustic and Country. In the meantime, East 54’s newest restaurant Saffron will open on Wednesday, May 26 at 5 pm for dinner. Serving Indian cuisine, it is at 3140 Environ Way, Chapel Hill 27517. It will be open daily for lunch and dinner.

Locally Grown, presented by The Town of Chapel Hill and the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership, is a summer-long series of FREE live concerts and movies on the Wallace Plaza, atop the Wallace Parking Deck at 150 E. Rosemary St. This summer’s line up includes nationally-known and locally-based music acts as well as documentary and feature films created by local authors and directors.
Locally Grown kicks off with a concert at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 24, with Southern Culture on the Skids and opening act The Moaners. Concert nights feature a Beer Garden offering beer and a selection of wines; as well as food from some of Franklin Street’s favorite restaurants. The Old Ceremony with opening act Ryan Gustafson will perform on Thursday, July 29, and Lost in the Trees with opening act The Physics of Meaning will perform on Thursday, Aug. 26.
The movies include documentary and feature films as well as entertaining movies for the whole family. The Varsity on Franklin Theater will offer concessions at all movie nights. Movies start at sundown so bring a chair or blanket, grab food to-go from a downtown restaurant, and enjoy a picnic dinner under the stars! Movies include ‘Big Fish’ based on the novel by author Daniel Wallace and ‘Sherman’s March’ by, internationally renowned and North Carolina native, documentarian Ross McElwee. Movies start on July 8.

Family event featuring barbecue cooking contest, musical entertainment, antique car display, arts and crafts, food and merchandise vendors, Hog Day souvenirs and more. This year’s children’s activities include a bounce house and inflatables, pony rides, and small petting zoo. Enjoy corn toss games, remote race cars, 50/50 and more. Hog Day returns to the River Park off of E. Margaret Lane in downtown Hillsborough. Activities are June 18 from 6 pm – 9 pm and June 19 from 9am – 6 pm . Admission is Free .
New this year is the First Annual Hog Day Invitational. On Saturday, June 19, the top finishers from 2009 will be competing for People’s Choice. The pork prepared by these cooks will be served individually to the public, which will then vote for their favorite. For $5, attendees will be able to purchase a sample of each and then vote for People’s Choice. Also, $4 BBQ sandwiches will be sold as in previous years.
Also new is the Eno River Farmers Market recipe contest and cook off at the Public Market House as a part of the Hog Day festivities on June 19th. Contestants will prepare four quarts of a homemade cold vegetable side dish. Each contestant will make their entry at home and bring it to the Public Market House between 8-10 am on June 19th for judging. Hog Day patrons will then be able to sample the sides alongside their award-winning barbecue. Prizes will be given for Best Use of Local Ingredients in addition to First, Second and Third Place. The entrants will be split into two categories: amateur and professional.

Hog Day is presented by the Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce with proceeds going to support the chamber’s community programs.

In a unique collaboration, some of the Orange County region’s most talented cooks will pair with Piedmont farmers to prepare a picnic-style feast that celebrates local foods and the people who grow and make them. The meal will offer the opportunity to taste beautifully prepared, farm-fresh food representing the bounty and diversity of our region, as well as a wide assortment of locally crafted foodstuffs including farmstead cheese, pickles, preserves, breads, pastries, beer, wine, and cured meat.
