News from the Ackland Art Museum
The Ackland Museum Store, located on the corner of Franklin and Columbia street in downtown Chapel Hill, has a focused emphasis on merchandise that supports and reflects the Museum’s core mission to animate, inspire, and transform people’s lives with works of art. The Store’s inventory includes home decor items such as pottery, glass, and metalwork; kitchen and tabletop items; jewelry and accessories; children’s toys and books; and stationery. Books about art history and criticism, contemporary art and design, and culture and lifestyles are also available, as well as books by UNC and regional authors and artists’ monographs.
A dedicated gallery space at the Ackland Museum Store features rotating exhibitions of original artworks in a variety of media by local and regional artists and artisans. The premier exhibition features works by seven North Carolina artists who have a connection to Penland School of Crafts, whether as a teacher, student, or resident. The show, entitled “Nothing is Impossible,” features work by Margaret Couch Cogswell (book arts, multi-media), Celia Gray (encaustic paintings), Bryant Holsenbeck (environmental art), Ann Marie Kennedy (paper art, installation), Evan Lightner (furniture), Gretchen McLaren (metal), and Sylvie Rosenthal (woodwork, sculpture).
The Ackland Museum Store hours are Monday through Saturday,10:00 AM – 5:30 PM; Thursday 10:00 AM – 8:30 PM; Sunday 12:00 – 5:00 PM. All proceeds from the store support the Ackland’s exhibition and education programs. Parking is available at several nearby municipal and private parking decks, and at meters on Franklin Street. Several of Hillsborough’s loveliest private and public gardens in and around the historic downtown area will be open to the public, rain or shine, on Saturday, May 14, from 10 am to 4 pm and on Sunday, May 15, from 1- 5 pm. The tour will benefit the programs of the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough, sponsoring organization of the event.
There will also be a plant sale, the OC Beekeepers will dedicate a pollinator garden at the Alexander Dickson House, and refreshments will be sold at the Nash Hooper House garden (which is a stop on the tour). Also learn about the garden behind the Hillsborough Wine Company on Churton Street.
Adult tickets are $15 with children 12 years and under admitted free. Tickets are good both days. You can purchase tickets online through the http://www.visithillsboroughnc.org website or drop by the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough at the Orange County Visitors Center, 150 East King Street, Hillsborough. National Tourism Week is, May 7-15, 2011. The week long celebration was designed to raise awareness about the economic value of travel and to promote the impact travelers have on areas like Orange County, NC.
In Orange County travel matters and is a significant sector of the economy with domestic visitor spending generating $135 million in 2009.
More than 1,600 jobs in Orange County were directly attributable to travel and tourism.
As part of National Travel and Tourism Week Tuesday, May 10th has been identified by the Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau as Orange County Travel Rally Day, and citizens and visitors are invited to stop at the Visitors Center at 501 West Franklin Street in downtown Chapel Hill for a free souvenir refrigerator magnet. We will also be serving sweet tea and cookies. Our hours are 8:30 am – 5 pm.
“In Orange County we invite all citizens to stop by and see the Visitors Center, pick up a new 2011 Visitors Guide, browse our artwork and materials and receive a free souvenir magnet, which is a popular item, loved by visitors to our community. These magnets are a way to remind residents of the positive impact the travel sector has on Orange County,” said Laurie Paolicelli, director of the visitors bureau.

Info from the Eno River Farmers’ Market
On Saturday, April 30th at 7 pm, The Eno River Farmers Market in historic downtown Hillsborough will host its second “Hillsborough Harvest Dinner; An Evening at the Eno River Farmers Market”. This locally sourced five-course dinner will once again connect seasonal eating back to its source. Local Chef, Austin Genke of Box Carr Farms, will prepare the food and highlight locally raised pork, lamb, vegetables, fruit, cheese, and baked goods from Eno River Farmers Market vendors to prepare an elegant seated farm-to-fork dinner for 72 guests.
The Harvest Dinner is sponsored by the market and the Orange County Visitors Bureau and will celebrate local farmers and their sustainably grown foods. Plus, the event will take place at the beautiful sheltered Public Market House on E. Margaret Lane in downtown Hillsborough where the market is held every Saturday morning.
This year’s menu combines a variety of locally grown vegetables, fruit and meat from over ten farms. Experience pasture-raised pork from Fickle Creek Farm and Box Carr Farm, grass-fed lamb from Rogers Cattle Company and a variety of pickles from Two Chicks Farm. Ingredients such as organic Swiss chard and turnips will come from Timberwood Organics. Speckled Bird Farm will supply the sun chokes while Hurtgen Meadows and Whitted Bowers Farm will offer fresh asparagus and salad greens. The Hillsborough Cheese Company will provide a variety of goat and cow milk cheeses and dessert will be prepared by the Queen of Tarts made from local strawberries grown by Walker Farm. Several of the farmers will attend the dinner and patrons will have a chance to ask any questions.
The Harvest Dinner will also feature wine from Shelton vineyards, a premier winery located in the Yadkin Valley of NC. The JazzTones, a Hillsborough based music ensemble will provide an engaging and upbeat musical landscape to the evening dinner.
Tickets can be purchased for $60 at either the Eno River Farmers Market on Saturday mornings or by emailing the market manager at Eno River Farmers’ Market.
The Eno River Farmers Market offers farm-fresh, sustainably grown produce, cheese, meat, eggs, baked goods, prepared foods, and crafts from local growers and producers. It is open to vendors who reside and produce the items they sell within a 60-mile radius of Hillsborough, NC. Vendors must be the original producer of their items. The Market runs annually and is open April thru October every Saturday morning from 8am – 12 pm and during the winter from 10 am – Noon.
