Visitors Centers

There are two other official visitors centers besides the Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Center, the UNC Visitors' Center in Chapel Hill and the Orange County Visitors Center in Hillsborough.

Since 1992, the Visitors Center has provided information and assistance to all those visiting Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Hillsborough and the two dozen other communities of Orange County, and those planning to visit here. The Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau works closely with the two other visitors centers (at UNC and in Hillsborough) and numerous other organizations to promote visits, vacations and meetings in Orange County. ADA access (front entrance). Free parking behind building.

Located in the historic Alexander Dickson House (see separate listing), the visitors center provides information and assistance to travelers and those planning to visit the Hillsborough area, and conducts guided and self-guided tours of the historic downtown and surrounding neighborhoods. An adjacent garden displays traditional 18th and 19th centry plants used for cooking, medicine and dyeing cloth. The site includes an office used by Confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston during the Civil War. Tours are available on the second Saturday of the month at 10am and 2pm, cost is $5. Closed major holidays. Free parking on street.

In the Morehead Planetarium & Science Center building (West Lobby). The UNC Visitors’ Center is an appropriate gateway into the 730-acre, 30,000-student university, the first state-supported institution in the U.S., established in 1793. The visitors center provides information and assistance to all those visiting the university and its numerous departments and services, and conducts guided and self-guided tours of the historic section of the university. Above the visitors center is a small rotunda gallery of art and statuary. Parking available (ticket entry lot).
