Shopping is a delight for everyone, especially the kids. Somehow, no matter how gloomy the weather or how unhappy we may feel temporarily, a stroll down "main street" or a walk around the mall can be more uplifting than a doctor's prescription (and probably a lot less expensive today). The best thing is that Orange County isn't like Fifth Avenue or the Miracle Mile or Rodeo Drive—pricewise. It offers lots of national stores and brands, to be sure, but also more regional products that reflect the unique character and diversity and economy of the towns here and the greater North Carolina area.

Since 1975. What started as a tiny coffee roastery has become a 59,000-sq.ft. landmark gourmet food and kitchen accessories marketplace that The New York Times food critic Craig Claiborne referred to as “wall to wall and floor to ceiling, a visual and gustatory delight.” • Culinary Classes at A Southern Season (CLASS) brings top chefs, food writers and all-round gourmets from the U.S. and various countries to demonstrate their latest tools, techniques and tastes. Since 1977, Cameron’s has been an experience, not just a store. Started as a craft gallery, it now offers everything from gold earrings to plastic ants, plus gifts, greeting cards, candles, bath toys, jewelry, handbags, animal-head mounts and other highly entertaining, “off-the-wall stuff”. Don’t miss the shrine room—where nothing is for sale—and its Elvis prayer wall.
