Gallery features a vast variety of “upcycled” and repurposed artworks. Gallery uses Earth friendly and repurposed materials in the making of one of a kind bags, abstract art, furniture and clothing designs. Susan Frosch: jewelry, pottery and stained glass, Karen Casey: fused glass jewelery, bowls, tables, clocks and more, Beth Palmer: hand painted scarfs and bags, Heidi Berkovitz: photography, and hand painted cards, Charissa Vallejo: grocery bags out of repurposed clothing, jeanmarie griffin: reuse artist using fabric to furniture to create bags to wall art.

Outdoor pool is open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. The 25-meter pool offers zero-depth entry and 4 lap lanes. Locker rooms, showers and family changing area are available. The permanent collection of over 15,000 objects includes the art of Asia, Africa, Europe and America, with works ranging from ancient times to the 21st century. The Museum holds the most significant collection of Asian art in the state and one of the largest collections of works on paper in the Southeast. Long known for its strength in European painting and sculpture, the Ackland has recently added additional emphasis to the building of its collection of 20th-century and contemporary art. Admission is free.

The Ackland Museum Store has a focused emphasis on merchandise that supports and reflects the Museum’s core mission to animate, inspire, and transform people’s lives with works of art.  The Store’s inventory includes home décor items such as pottery, glass, and metalwork; kitchen and tabletop items; jewelry and accessories; children’s toys and books; and stationery.  Books about art history and criticism, contemporary art and design, and culture and lifestyles are also available, as well as books by UNC and regional authors and artists’ monographs. 

A dedicated gallery space at the Ackland Museum Store features rotating exhibitions of original artworks in a variety of media by local and regional artists and artisans.  The premier exhibition features works by seven North Carolina artists who have a connection to Penland School of Crafts, whether as a teacher, student, or resident.  The show, entitled "Nothing is Impossible," features work by Margaret Couch Cogswell (book arts, multi-media), Celia Gray (encaustic paintings), Bryant Holsenbeck (environmental art), Ann Marie Kennedy (paper art, installation), Evan Lightner (furniture), Gretchen McLaren (metal), and Sylvie Rosenthal (woodwork, sculpture).

Late 18th century Quaker-plan house was moved from its original site 1-1/4 mi. SE of Hillsborough and restored. An adjacent garden displays traditional 18th and 19th century plants used for cooking, medicine and dyeing cloth. The site includes an office used by Confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston before he surrendered his troops to Union Gen. William T. Sherman at nearby Durham Station in April 1865, which ended the Civil War. Parking.
